WORK EXPERIENCE:
1992 - DATE
The management and operation of a geotechnical consultancy specialising in land evaluation and site
investigation works relating to land development proposals including former landfill sites, advising
clients on the geotechnical input of the engineering design works and monitoring their implementation.
The assessment of geotechnical problems associated with shallow mine workings and karst solution
features relating to a range of engineering projects
1991 - 1992
The management of an independent geotechnical consultancy specialising in hazard assessment, the
planning and management of site investigations. Projects included geotechnical advice for various
highway and infrastructure projects relating to pile, retaining wall and pavement design, mining and
slope stability, contaminated land evaluation and colliery spoil tip reclamation for West Glamorgan
County Council. Housing subsidence claim investigations. Land evaluation, ground and hydrogeological
investigation of a number of development sites.
1989 - 1990
Chief engineer and associate responsible for all the activities of the company. Projects included
landslip investigations, river stabilization works, landfill site assessment and gas monitoring,
assessment of sand and gravel resources, earthwork and rock fill assessment for roadworks for part of
the M4 in West Glamorgan, the assessment and treatment of shallow mine workings, and
hydrogeological studies for proposed development works.
1987 - 1989
Senior engineering geologist responsible for the geotechnical input to all company projects. Projects
included feasibility and site investigation works for the Cardiff Bay Barrage, groundwater investigations
for the City of Cardiff and the evaluation of hazards associated with the proposed impoundment of
Cardiff Bay. Marine foundations, slope stability and mining hazard evaluation relating to various
development work proposals.
1985 - 1987
Materials engineer responsible for the selection testing and quality control of all materials required for
the construction of the military airbase at Taif in Saudi Arabia.
1982 - 1985
Site engineering geologist for the construction of the A470T Abercynon to Pentrebach which included
the stabilisation of flowslides, crossing the area of the Aberfan tip disaster, areas of shallow and deep
mine workings, mining subsidence, abandoned adits and coal shafts. Work included investigatory
boring, drilling and grouting of shallow mine workings and relief wells, earthwork trials the assessment
of soil and rock materials suitability, compaction control, rock cutting monitoring of blasting and the
assessment and implementation of remedial treatment.
1979 - 1982
Soils engineer for new capital road and bridge projects. Work included earthworks certification,
supervision of contract and direct labour site investigation contracts, slope stability analyses of
earthworks, disused mineral tips and existing landslides, ground subsidence analyses, the
investigation and treatment of old mine workings.
1977 - 1979
Engineering geologist for site investigation works in South Wales and overseas. Work included
reconnaissance mapping of Gharian in Libya and supervision of investigations for various contracts on
behalf of Welsh Water Authority including the Neath Trunk Sewer Scheme.
REPORTS & PUBLICATIONS:
Production of over 1000 geotechnical and environmental reports, concerning industrial and housing
developments, highways, pipelines, dams, ground improvement and grouting projects.
